IPL Cricket 2011
The revolution which culminated in watching live IPL cricket for free

The Indian premier league was kick-started right after the mega-event of Cricket World Cup 2011. In a first-of-its kind sporting event, it is the only one which was watched for absolutely no cost by millions of people worldwide. This was possible by the deal struck by online video sharing giant, owned by Google, YouTube and the then chairman of the Indian premier; to make available IPL cricket free of cost to people with an internet connection. It was nothing less than a revolution in itself. Although some people cribbed about the delay in transmission of the broadcast by a few minutes, nevertheless the mere ability of a person to watch the big game streaming live on his/her computer screen was phenomenal.

Many pundits consider it as a watershed moment in history, and rightly so, the just-concluded Cricket World Cup was also broadcasted live on the internet. It seems the International Council of Cricket directly lifted a page from the book of, now deposed, IPL chairman-Lalit Modi. Indians are an astute group of cricket administrators. The penchant that Indians have for the game of cricket have manifested into them holding key positions in the international regulatory body, famously known as ICC. The revenue that is generated by any cricketing event involving India has made the BCCI a financial powerhouse and as the old adage goes-with power comes authority. This authority has been used many a times and at some point it has bordered on arm-twisting, a case in point would be the Harbhajan-Symonds racism scandal.

Coming back to watching IPL cricket free on the internet, this season of the IPL will also be streamed live across the world with Google proclaiming it to be the most-widely distributed cricketing event in history. With this said by Google-the modern day god of internet users, there is certainly no doubt about it.
